Whenever I crochet in public, I get strange stares from people. Some are amazed (how can a ball of yarn turn into something like that?), while others look at me as if I am a strange creature from another dimension. Haha.
I love to crochet and I don’t mind if people tell me that it’s an old lady’s craft. I’m glad to see that crochet is finally making a big comeback. And a lot of young people are getting hooked too (literally!).
But where exactly did crochet originate from? Wikipedia says crochet was originally practiced by the peasants in Scotland, with a small hooked needle called a shepherd’s hook. This dates back from the 17th century. The oldest dated reference to crochet is in The Memoirs of a Highland Lady (Elizabeth Grant) published sometime between 1845 and 1867. Crocheted lacework were a big hit back then.
Crochet is gaining popularity again. Not only are the young people becoming interested in this craft, the trends have evolved as well. From just plain lacework, crochet has branched out to different forms and styles such as wearables, character beanies and my personal favorite – amigurumi.
